Design for Additive Manufacturing: Recent Innovations and Future Directions

Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) provides a necessary framework using novel (AM) technologies engineering innovations. Recent AM advances include shaping nickel-based superalloys lightweight aerospace applications, reducing environmental impacts with large-scale concrete printing, and personalizing food medical devices improved health. Although many new capabilities are enabled by AM, design to ensure the technology reaches its full potential. Here, DfAM research is reviewed in context of Fabrication, Generation, Assessment phases that bridge gap between Materials, processes, constraints considered during fabrication steps understand building systems specified properties functions. generation conceptualization, configuration, optimization drive creation high-performance designs. validating, testing, modeling future iterations improvements. These provide discussing innovations aerospace, automotives, construction, food, medicine, robotics while highlighting opportunities services, bio-inspired design, robots, machine learning. Overall, has positively impacted diverse further great potential driving developments innovation.
